Integrating the Issue of Female Genital Mutilation in Education
In Mali, GIZ supports the education sector to offer a forum for addressing controversial or taboo themes such as female genital mutilation. The Basic Education project has designed educational guidelines containing innovative and participatory methods. Teachers undergo intensive basic and further training where they learn how to integrate the topic into their lessons. Since many girls do not attend school and female genital mutilation not only concerns the girls themselves, but also their parents, future partners, families and communities, the project also creates forums outside the classroom – intergenerational dialogues – to promote dialogue, information and exchange.
