Flagship projects - „Prioritized measures and activities“
The Green Innovation Centres in Agricultural Systems (GIAE) programme supplies 187 female smallholders with hand tools such as hoes and rakes in order to make their work easier; these instruments have been specifically tailored to female smallholders’ needs and designed and tested together with the smallholders themselves. A long-term study carried out by the National University of Ireland in Galway aims to show the impact of the tools on the income earned by the 187 women farmers.
Working together with the Green Innovation Centres programme, the Programme for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Tunisia is using the smartphone app “Plantix”. This is adapted to the needs of female smallholders in Tunisia, thereby allowing them to gain easy access to information on plant protection and thus prevent crop failures. In 2017, training is to be provided to 50 female “Plant Doctors” who will be able to show female smallholders how to use the app and also pass on further practical knowledge.
