Advancing Women-Friendly Koran Exegesis

Caricature: Minarett where muezzin calls for gender equality. In Yemen, civil-status law is derived from Islamic Law – the Sharia. The organisation Women's Forum for Research and Training, which GIZ supports, clarifies the legal rights that the Koran establishes for women. Women were trained as multipliers in women-friendly Koran exegesis and religious authorities were educated on women’s rights in Islam. Also lawyers, judges, journalists, members of parliament, and professors participated in the training. This led to a public debate that increased awareness of the positive legal rights that the Koran gives women.
